The European Commission invites the EU member states to extend the regime of closing external borders until the summer. This was reported by the press service of the organization on May 8.

"Today, the Commission invited the Schengen member states to extend the time limit on non-essential trips to the EU for another 30 days, until June 15," the statement said.

The Commission notes that the lifting of travel restrictions should be phased.

EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Yulva Johansson emphasized that the opening of external borders should be preceded by a coordinated removal of border controls between EU member states.

Any further extension of travel restrictions after June 15, 2020 will need to be re-evaluated based on the development of the epidemiological situation, the European Commission believes.

The travel restriction applies to the “EU + zone”, which includes all the Schengen member states (including Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania) and 4 Schengen associated states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), as well as Switzerland - 30 countries.

We recall, on March 24, it was reported that the European Union decided to temporarily limit trips to the member countries of its bloc in order to curb the spread of coronavirus.

On April 8, the European Commission called for an extension of travel restrictions until May 15. All EU member states (except Ireland) and countries outside the Schengen area have since decided to introduce and extend a border closure regime.
