European Union will be able to complete negotiations about Britain’s withdrawal from the bloc if it stays united, thus EU unity is in the interest of the United Kingdom. This was reported by Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, according to Reuters.
"We need to remain united as EU 27. It is only then that we will be able to conclude the negotiations, which means that our unity is also in the UK's interest," Tusk said.
He also reminded during the meeting with journalists before EU summit that 27 countries remaining in the EU want a "close and strong future relationship" with London.
Speaking about financial Britain’s obligations to EU budget, Tusk noted:
"There is absolutely no question about it. But before discussing the future, we have to sort out our past. We will handle it fairly. It is the only possible way to move forward."
Beyond that, he stressed that EU wants firm guarantees for all citizens and their families affected by Brexit procedure.
"This must be the number one priority for the EU and the UK. The Commission has already prepared a precise and detailed list of citizens' rights we want to protect," Tusk said.
