The European Commission intends to hold the gas negotiations in the trilateral format of the EU, Ukraine and Russia. Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commission said that at a press conference in Brussels. Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported that.
He reiterated that the three sides agreed to continue the talks in mid-May. 'So far, and I understand this, due to the election campaign in Ukraine, we still haven't got the response [on the meeting]. But I can tell you for sure that we'll do everything possible so that the trilateral meeting takes place before the summer or the summer vacation', the official said.
'We all should realize that the winter is already behind the corner. We should resume situation with the gas supplies not only for the next winter; as you know, the EU top priority is to provide security for the long-term transit contract across Ukraine for at least next 10 years (...) We want to hold the meeting as soon as possible after the presidential election in Ukraine', Šefčovič concluded.
In April 2018, Russian energy monopolist Gazprom declined the option to extend the gas contract with Naftogaz company. The Russian side stated that the talks on the gas transit across Ukraine have not begun yet, merely assuming such possibility.
