The EU leadership will discuss the question of the issuance of Russian passports to the residents of the occupied Donbas, as the Head of EU Representation to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli said in an interview for Interfax-Ukraine.
“Our leadership will discuss this question within the next several weeks. I can’t predict the results of the discussions, but the explicit condemnation of such actions was announced,” Hugues Mingarelli said.
He stressed that the EU reacted to the decision of Russian leadership on the facilitation of the procedure of issuance of Russian citizenship for the residents of occupied territories of Donbas.
“It was announced that by such actions Russia performs another attack at the Ukrainian sovereignty, which is directed at destabilization of Ukraine by the actions, and a clear violation of Minsk Agreements,” the Ambassador noted.
On April 24, Putin signed a decree according to which the procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship for residents of Donetsk and Luhansk regions is simplified. Applications for entry into the citizenship of the Russian Federation received from residents of occupied Donbas territories, should be considered no more than three months from the date of submission.
President-elect Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine would grant citizenship to representatives of all peoples suffering from authoritarian and corrupt regimes, and first of all to Russians.
Besides, he said that Russia should not spend their time in vain with their attempts to lure the citizens of Ukraine into getting Russian passports.
Ukraine appealed to the UN Security Council after this decision and Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Volodymyr Yelchenko called it to be the daring step, which contradicts the Minsk Agreements.
