17:29, 1 April 2020

The quarantinable March comes to its end. Unfortunately, another quarantinable April is on the threshold

So, let's list the holidays and memorable dates in April.

Days off - 9 days off vs 21 working days

Monday, April 20 was added to the traditional weekend on Saturday and Sunday due to Easter holiday tradition (in 2020 Easter will be celebrated on April 19). Thus, the celebration of Easter will bring Ukrainians three days off in a row - April 18.19 and 20.

April Fool's Day

Open source
April traditionally begins with the day of laughter or as it is also called April Fool's Day. On April 1, people crack jokes and play pranks on each other.

The most common theory is that April Fool's Day originated in France. Until 1582, French people celebrated New Year in spring - from March 25 to April 1. However, after the Gregorian calendar was introduced, the New Year holidays moved to current date - January 1. Due to poor communication, this news did not reach everyone and many continued to celebrate the New Year as before. Educated citizens started to make fun of those who remained ignorant: the most popular prank was to stick the paper fish to the back of such person and make fun of him calling him Poisson d'Avril (‘April fish’).

Supposedly, this holiday came to Ukraine from Germany at the beginning of 18th century. It was called a day of lies, or Maria the Liar — one of the popular nicknames of Mary of Egypt — a saint, whose day of commemoration by the old style coincides with April 1. On this day, the girls deceived guys to manipulate future husband.

International Children's Book Day

The International Children's Book Day falls on April 2.

Usually, there are book fairs and celebrations around children's books and other special events that may include encounters with authors and illustrators, writing competitions or announcements of book awards. Though this year is a bit different.

International Internet Day

On April 4, Ukrainians and with people of other countries will celebrate International Internet Day.

World Health Day

World Health Day is on Tuesday, April 7. It will be the day to celebrate the work of nurses and midwives and remind world leaders of the critical role they play in keeping the world healthy (when it is unhealthy to the utmost, - sarcasm!).

Day of Workers of Rocket and Space Industry

Open source
On April 12, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Workers of Rocket and Space Industry, as well as the International Day of Human Space Flight.

The holiday was established to honor the flight of the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who was the first person in the world who made an orbital flight around the Earth. On April 12, 1961, Gagarin on Vostok-1 spacecraft took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome and became the first person ever to fly to space. His flight in near-space lasted 108 minutes.

Employees of space and rocket industry annually receive congratulations from the government representatives, local authorities and heads of the institutions on this day.

April 12 was also the date of the first Space Shuttle launch, STS-1 of Columbia in 1981, which is also commemorated on this date.

World Rock and Roll Day

April 13 is considered the World Rock and Roll Day, and April 15 is the Universal Day of Culture.

It’s a day to celebrate the best music and the Rock ‘N’ Roll lifestyle. Rock music originated in America in the 1950s and has shaped every generation since.

Again, no rock festivals this year.

April 18 is the Day of Radio Amateur and the International Day For Monuments and Sites.

On Tuesday, April 23, Ukrainian psychologists will celebrate their professional holiday - All-Ukrainian Day of Psychologist.

And April 24 is an International Secretary Day.

International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day

April 26 is one of the most tragic days in the history of Ukraine. On this day in 1986, an explosion occurred at the fourth power unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The accident became the largest man-made disaster in the history of atoms of peace as many people fell victim or got ill. Prypyat city, once prosperous, eventually became a ghost town.

The end of the month will be marked by a more cheerful holiday - the world will celebrate International Day of Dance on April 29.

November 29, 2016, there was a remarkable event in the history of nuclear security of Ukraine and the whole world. The huge dome-shaped building, known among specialists as the New Safe Confinement, covered the old Chernobyl "sarcophagus" to the next 100 years to protect the emergency fourth reactor of Chernobyl, radiation equipment, nuclear waste residues and dust.

At the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl protective arch was set.

This steel giant is unique not only because of its size, but also because it was created by the latest technology, and its cost is quite comparable with the estimate of interplanetary advanced projects.
