Semifinals of the US Open took place on September 5. Ukraine's Elina Svitolina stood against Serena Williams; it was their sixth fixture.
The first set proved tough for the American, but Williams still won it (6:3). Svitolina fought back in the second but eventually gave in to the tougher and more experienced opponent (6:1).
"I have a flight to Zhengzhou on Saturday. The first game is slated for Tuesday or Wednesday, so there's no time for preparations. Currently, I'm going to recover and see how it goes because I have a trouble with my knee again. And I don't want it to end up the way it was in summer. Let's see how my health goes. Now, I plan to perform in tournaments in China. They're crucial because I'm trying to make it to the playoffs. This time, my knee was fine because I took the painkillers, it worked. But I don't want to take pills to conceal the pain. This is wrong. I'm 24, and soon I'll turn 25. It's a long career to go. I don't want to hurt my tendons", Svitolina commented on the outcome of the game and her further plans.
“There were long games in the first set. She’s such a good player, two semis in a row. This is the biggest stadium for tennis on the whole planet, and I think of it that way. It’s such an honour for me and my opponent to play here”, Williams told the press.
