Head coach of Ukraine's national team Andriy Shevchenko commented on the victory over Sweden in Euro 2020, which brought the Ukrainians into the historic quarterfinals of the tournament. He also addressed the upcoming game against England. Football 1 TV channel quoted him on June 30.
"I want to congratulate all Ukrainian supporters on this historical moment. The boys actually played for them. We're very pleased that the Ukrainian diaspora supported, though it was hard to get here. We heard you, and we appreciate such a great support. I send my best wishes to Ukraine and our president who supported us, too. We know that the entire country watched the game and stood for us", Shevchenko said.
The coach explained that Artem Besedin suffered an injury, and it's up to the doctors to decide whether he could resume playing and show up at the pitch in the game with England. "We hope the knee ligaments are intact. He took quite a hit. We're very sad about this moment. Sure, such things happen in football. It's a tough moment, all the more on this level. Artem has endured a lot during the recent years. He had kids just recently. We all support him, and he stays with us. With England, the guys will play for Besedin as well", he said.
Shevchenko then focused on the upcoming fixture against the English team in the quarterfinals. "It's pracrtically the final part of the competition. It's good that we had a lot of time to get prepared for the game. Now, we're almost out of time. We'll help the players restore - first of all, physically and psychologically. We spent a lot of effort to get where we are now. TO get that kind of result, one needs faith and fortitude. Today, the footballers showed that on the pitch. England is a strong team with good players and a lot of decent substitutions. I watched the first half of their game against Germany. It's quite a powerful team, and I'm well aware of that. They have a great coach. We understand how hard the match will be. The most important thing is to replenish our forces now. We will start preparing tomorrow (July 1, - 112 International). We'll force our game up the British - something that would let us reach the positive result", said Ukraine's head coach.
Ukraine and England will play at Stadio Olimpico in Rome on July 3.
