155 athletes to present Ukraine in 14 disciplines in Paralympics in Rio this September

Ukraine will be presented by 155 athletes the Paralympic Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. It is reported by the National Sports Committee for the Disabled of Ukraine.

This year Ukraine will be represented at the Paralympics the largest team in the history of Paralympic Movement in Ukraine.

Ukrainians will participate in 14 sports: rowing, sitting volleyball, judo, track and field athletics, table tennis, powerlifting, swimming, shooting sports, archery, wheelchair fencing, football 7-a-side, cycling (track, road), parakanoe, goalball. Ukraine will debut parakanoe and goalball in the Paralympic program of 2016.

A total about 4500 paralympics athletes will compete for 528 sets of medals in 22 sports.

New Sports, presented in Rio this year are parakanoe and paratriathlon.

Ukrainian Paralympic athletes will be seen off on the Square of Independence in Kyiv on August 27.

Sports Minister Ihor Zhdanov said that athletes will get up to 40 thousand dollars for a gold medal, up to 26 thousand dollars for the silver and up to 18 thousand dollars for bronze, according to Ukrainian News.

He noted that the state budget at the Paralympics spent around 2.7 million dollars for Paralympic Games 2016.

Note that Ukraine took part in Atlanta Paralympic Games in 1996 for the first time, winning 7 medals and taking the 44th place in medal standings. Later in Sydney Games in 2000 Ukraine won 37 awards and became the 35th in medal count. 

We climbed to 4th position in the overall standings with 74 and 84 medals respectively in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Paralympics 2016 will be held in Rio de Janeiro on September 7 - 18.
