Ukrainian saber fencer Olga Kharlan won the World Fencing Championship in Budapest.
In an intense final, Kharlan defeated 7-time world champion and Olympic champion from Russia’s Sofia Velikaya with a score of 15:14, xsport.ua reported.
After defeating rivals from Malaysia, Georgia, and the Republic of Korea, Kharlan beat compatriot Alina Komashchuk (15:14) in the quarterfinals and defeated Romania’s Bianca Pascu (15: 5) in the semifinals.
One of the best saber fencers in the world, Kharlan also holds a bronze medal from both the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics and is now a six-time world champion.
Earlier, Olga Kharlan won the World Cup in fencing, which is held in Tunisia. This was reported by the press service of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine.

Earlier Ukrainian athlete claimed bronze in the individual saber fencing event in Rio Olympics; Kharlan defeated French Manon Brunet.
‘The most difficult thing was to stand against my teammate Alina Komashchuk. We performed in many competitions, yet we have never met as opponents before. And now it happened during the Olympics; I was extremely worried about that. I realized I had to win this medal. Well, the competitions continue, and we’ve got a team event ahead of us, so we’ll be fighting right till the end’, Olga Kharlan said in her interview with the National Olympic Committee.
