The two-time world champion in judo, 20-year-old Daria Bilodid, brought Ukraine the first medal of the Olympic Games in Tokyo - a bronze one, according to the press service of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine.
"Ukrainian judoka Daria Bilodid defeats Shira rishony from Israel and adds the bronze medal of the Olympics to the title of world, European and European Games champion," the statement reads.
Meanwhile,the number the Olympic Games participants infected with coronavirus has already reached 123 people. Over the past day, 17 new cases of the disease have been confirmed.
"Seventeen more people linked to the Tokyo Olympics have tested positive for Covid-19, including one athlete, bringing the total since the beginning of this month to 123," the message reads.
The total includes 14 contractors and two games officials, one of whom had been staying at the athletes' village.
The athlete is non-Japanese but had not been residing in the village, according to the organizing body of the games. The data, compiled by the committee, go back to July 1 and do not include athletes and staff who tested positive at pre-games training camps in Japan.
