The opening ceremony of the XXIX World Winter Universiade 2019 took place in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Gazeta.Ru reports.

About three thousand students from 59 countries of the world will compete for 76 sets of awards (732 medals) in 11 kinds of sports: biathlon, alpine skiing, ice hockey, curling, skiing, snowboarding, figure skating, short track, freestyle, ski orienteering and hockey with ball. The last two sports for the first time were included in the program of student games.

For the first time in history, athletes from Nepal, the United Arab Emirates and the Philippines arrived at the Winter Student Games. The Ukrainian national team did not go to competitions in Krasnoyarsk.

A statement regarding the participation of Ukraine in the Universiade was made by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, reports Interfax. Its essence comes down to the fact that the preparation and participation of national teams in competitions in the territory of the Russian Federation is not funded from the State Budget of Ukraine, as well as the payment of the corresponding prize money and the like. All the risks of athletes staying on the territory of the aggressor country are laying on the sports ederations and the athletes themselves.

The Universiade 2019 will last until March 12.
