Shakhtar Donetsk – Manchester City
UEFA Champions League, Group Stage, Round 6
Metallist Arena, Kharkiv, Ukraine
December 6, 21.45 Kyiv time
Mountaineers prepare for the home game against the Sky Blues in Kharkiv; it’s now or never, as Shakhtar cannot afford another draw, all the more a loss in the final round of the group stage of UEFA Champions League.
Previously, 112 International wrote that as Man City defeated Feyenoord and now enjoys five victories in five games, the Ukrainian team finds itself in a tough spot. Shakhtar needs to make it at least a draw – or win – in order to proceed to the playoffs. If the Mountaineers lose, their only hope to qualify for the playoffs will be Napoli’s draw or loss to Feyenoord in the Netherlands.
Paulo Fonseca, Shakhtar’s head coach, shared his views on the upcoming game. ‘Manchester City is one of the strongest teams on the planet. Considering the kind of performance they’ve been putting up lately, it couldn’t be any other way. We’re glad that the head coach of the Brazilian national team will be present during the game. It might be another reason for our Brazilian players to feel even more motivated. As for our current position in the group… we’re not going to be worried about the parallel game in Rotterdam (Feyenoord will host Napoli – 112 International). It’s all in our hands. If we put up a decent game, we’ll be able to sort things out on our own. We’ll try to do everything to not depend on Napoli; they will, too, but that should not be of our concern. Of course, we’re aiming to win and feel like winners; however, playing against Guardiola’s team is never easy,’ the manager said.
