A dramatic face-off took place in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, as Shakhtar Donetsk hosted Manchester City in Round 6 of the Group Stage of UEFA Champions League.
Tonight, the Mountaineers and the Citizens looked like strong and stubborn adversaries on the pitch. It was a beautiful game, where Man City could afford a loss (they remained first in their group anyway). Shakhtar, on the other hand, badly needed a victory to calmly make it to the playoffs - regardless of the outcome of the parallel game, where Feyenoord hosted Napoli in Rotterdam (the Dutch won 2-1; it was their first victory in the group stage).
The home team scored twice already in the first half, withstanding the opponent's pressure at the same time. Brazilian legionnaires Bernard and Ismaily made it 2-0, which definitely annoyed the guests and they stepped up, increasing the overall pace of the game. But Shakhtar stood up straight right till the end. The Citizens only managed to score from the spot kick, as Shakhtar's defenseman tackled Gabriel Jesus; Sergio Aguero left goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov no chances.
Now, Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester City are heading to the playoffs; this stage of the Champions League is slated for the first half of 2018. Feyenoord and Napoli are eliminated from the competition.
This year's final game of the Champions League will take place in Kyiv, at the NSC Olimpiysky stadium. The fitxure is slated for May 2018.
