Dynamo Kyiv played a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League fixture against Benfica. The game was played in the Ukrainian capital, at the NSC Olimpiysky stadium.

The guests controlled the ball most of the time, enjoying advantage thanks to their more experienced players. But the Kyivites played in an organized manner, so the opponents did not have many chances to open the score. The first serious attack was theirs, actually; Mykola Shaparenko landed a great shot after the free strike, but the goalkeeper took the ball from underneath the crossbar.

Roman Yaremchuk, the Ukrainian forward of Benfica was quite active, too; however, this kind of activity cost him a yellow card. Benfica tried hard to breach Dynamo's defense but could not do much about it. Eventually, Kyivites almost won, with Shaparenko pushing the ball past the goalkeeper. However, the referee doubted that moment and watched the replay at VAR system. It appeared that Denys Garmash was in the offside, so the goal was canceled.
