Ukraine's top tennis player Elina Svitolina qualified for the semifinals of the tennis tournament in the frameworks of the Sumer Olympics in Tokyo.
In the quarterfinal, the Ukrainian outmatched Italian Camilla Giorgi. Svitolina confidently defeated her opponent, leading the way in two sets. Thus, she reached the first Olympic semifinal stage in her career.
The Ukrainian's opponent in the semifinals will be Czech Marketa Vondroušová. The fixture is to take place on July 29. It will be the first semifinal for Ukraine's Olympic team in the singles; in 2008, Kateryna and Olena Bondarenko went toe-to-toe with the Williams sisters. Then, the Americans were the ones who celebrated the victory.
"I'm glad I could cope with it tonight; I had a tough fixture yesterday, and I had to spend a lot of time during the last three matches. I'm grateful for my team, which worked hard to help me recover and approach the game in the good shape. I knew that Giorgi is a tough opponent, and she can play quite nastily, so one needs to be in decent shape. I'm happy I managed to recover. In spite of some of my mistakes, I showed enough confidence tonight. And it paid off. Semifinals against Vondroušová? Well, I am aware of this player's game style, so I'll be getting ready. One needs to be in good shape to make it to the court", the Ukrainian commented on her victory in the quarterfinals.
