Sweden stops boycott of World Cup 2018 in Russia

"We were consistent and said that we will boycott only the opening of the championship, in this situation we believe that it is important to see and support our team, and we made this decision, for example, after consultations with Denmark," the minister said.

Representatives of Sweden will visit Russia to support the national team at the World Cup matches, despite the fact that they previously announced a boycott of the tournament and refused to attend the opening ceremony. This was stated by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden Margrete Wallström, reports Aftonbladet.

The changes are connected with the country's national team's presence in the playoffs of the championship, which became quite unexpected for the majority of fans. The government said that football players now need all possible support.

"We were consistent and said that we will boycott only the opening of the championship, in this situation we believe that it is important to see and support our team, and we made this decision, for example, after consultations with Denmark," the minister said.

It is not known who exactly from the government will go to Russia to visit the games of the Swedish team, however, the Foreign Minister stressed that there are "many of those who will." At the same time, the Minister of Sport Annika Strandhel previously reported that she does not plan to attend the tournament.

Previously, the Swedish team defeated the Mexican team with a score 3:0 and went to the 1/8 tournament, where it will meet with the Swiss team. The match will be held in St. Petersburg on July 3.
