A few days are left before the start of the European Football Championship. The starting whistle of the first Euro 2020 match will sound on Friday, June 11th.
All national teams participating in the tournament have already decided on the final applications and are making final preparations on the eve of the start of the championship.
The head coach of the Ukrainian national team Andriy Shevchenko announced the final list of those who will go to the Euro on Tuesday, June 1. There were both expected names and serious surprises.
It's time to get to know them in more detail. And try to figure out which of them to expect in the first team. And whom - in the nearest (or more distant) reserve.
- Heorhiy Bushchan
Competition for the goalkeeper position in the national team is very high. Georgy Buschan spent a good season at Dynamo Kyiv, where he was the uncontested main goalkeeper. In the national team, he spent three of the last five matches in the frame (Trubin played in the other two, about which a little below). Including the recent friendly match with Northern Ireland (where he almost became the author of an assist).
So far, it is he who is seen as the main goalkeeper at Euro. However, much will depend on his work in the near future, since competitors are clearly not sleeping.
Andriy Pyatov lost his place at the base in Shakhtar Donetsk. But I still went to the Euro. In addition, the day before he had already announced that he would end his career in the national team after Euro 2020.
About his chances to play Euro. They are. Depends on the work of competitors and on the results of the national team in the tournament.
In any case, Pyatov's experience is an important factor that Shevchenko may well take advantage of. Especially at such a big tournament.
- Anatoliy Trubin
Shakhtar's young talent, who beat Pyatov this season. He has already made his debut in the national team, although his debut can hardly be called confident.
Of course, Shevchenko loves to trust young people, but there are suspicions that not this time. And Euro 2020 will rather become a place for gaining new experience for Trubin, which is also important.
- Eduard Sobol
The main left-back of the Belgian champion, who had a pretty good club season. At Euro, he will face a serious fight for a place at the base with Dynamo Kyiv defender Vitaliy Mykolenko. We would not be in a hurry to name the winner.
- Ilya Zabarny
An eighteen-year-old Kyiv talent, a base player for the champion of Ukraine, who has already managed to interest many top European clubs. It's all about Zabarny.
It can play on Euro. And the chances are high enough. First of all, it depends on the tactics of Shevchenko, who periodically uses (primarily against strong opponents) a scheme with 5 defenders. Then Ilya may well become one of the central defenders.
- Vitaly Mykolenko
The main left-back of Kyiv "Dynamo" and the main left-back of the Ukrainian national team. If the Euro, as originally planned, had been held last year, there would have been no questions at all.
This year Mykolenko is not as convincing as in the past. He still does his job with high quality, but the stability is still diminished. Against the background of a good season for Sobol, this is at least an argument for increasing competition. And the competition, as you know, has not hindered a single team yet.
- Oleksandr Karavaev
A versatile right-wing player. In the national team, he is used more as a defender, although in principle he can play “higher”.
Karavaev is in fact the uncontested right edge of the national team.
- Oleksandr Tymchyk
Alexander had a very bad season. The reason is a serious injury he received at the very beginning. In total for “Dynamo” he was able to play only in four matches, for the starting lineup of the national team at Euro this, unfortunately, is not enough.
At Euro, he will be Karavaev's understudy.
- Denys Popov
Denis was also hampered by injuries. But he played clearly more than Tymchyk. Twenty-five matches for Dynamo in the season and, in principle, a fairly stable position at the start of the champion of Ukraine.
On Euro, most likely, it will be in stock. But it should appear on the field. At least once.
Sergei missed many matches due to injury, but this did not shake his position as the main defender of the Donetsk club. And already towards the end of the season this could be clearly seen.
At Euro, if nothing interferes (pah-pah), will be at the start. In any scheme of Shevchenko.
- Mykola Matvienko
The main defender of Shakhtar Donetsk. Quite often mentioned in the context of a possible transition to Europe (in particular, he was wooed several times to Arsenal, but still in no way).
It is quite possible that this issue will be resolved after the Euro, which will be closely watched by scouts from all over Europe.
Moreover, Matvienko's place at the base is hardly in doubt.
- Georgiy Sudakov
Taking Shakhtar's 18-year-old midfielder to Euro is perhaps Shevchenko's most resonant decision. About which he was asked more than once.
The head coach of the national team "keeps the defense" and repeats that Sudakov looks good and will continue to try.
Will he be able to play Euro? Unlikely. But the experience will be excellent.
- Taras Stepanenko
Everything is simple here. The key defensive player of Shakhtar and the Ukrainian national team. When Taras is healthy (and, unfortunately, his injuries did not pass by this year either), his place in the start of the Donetsk club and the national team, in fact, is not discussed.
The naturalized Brazilian had a very controversial season at Shakhtar. Marlos is still a part of the main clip of the club, but he hasn't shown any extravaganza for a long time. As well as in the national team.
Will play at Euro. But about the place at the base here, he is not guaranteed anything.
Captain of Dynamo Kyiv. He will compete with Taras Stepanenko for the starting position. And here a lot will depend on the form of Taras.
- Mykola Shaparenko
Mykola is actively playing in the main clip in the last friendly matches. It is unlikely that he will still be at the start in the official matches at Euro, but he should definitely appear on the field.
Not a bad season at Dynamo, not a bad game in the national team.
- Viktor Tsygankov
The leader of the attack of Kyiv "Dynamo" and, accordingly, the best scorer. In Euro, in fact, it will be Yarmolenko's competitor for a place in the base. And here Andrey's positions, in view of the season crumpled due to injury, do not seem to be unshakable.
West Ham (England)
Andrey recovered from injury but missed too much. And the question is still in what condition he will approach the start of the European Championship.
But I have to play at Euro. Yarmolenko's experience and his ability to be useful in any condition is what this team probably needs.
- Ruslan Malinovsky
Ruslan has gained excellent form at the end of the club season, and his position in the national team is now as strong as possible. Although, however, they have not been greatly questioned before.
- Yevgeniy Makarenko
The main player of the Belgian "Kortrijk", which has recently greatly improved its position in the Ukrainian national team. It can hardly qualify for the starting lineup (although there are options here), but it should enter the field for Euros.
- Oleksandr Zinchenko
Manchester City (England)
Alexander received a big moral blow after losing the Champions League final with ManCity, as Shevchenko spoke about. But he had enough time to recover.
Zinchenko is the main player of the national team, who will definitely be at the start (unless some force majeure interferes). Note that if in ManCity Zinchenko plays left-back, then in the national team he usually comes out in the center of the field.
- Roman Bezus
The situation is somewhat similar to Malinovsky. Bezus had an impressive end to the season for Gent, scoring six goals in his last 10 games.
It is unlikely that he was considered as a candidate for a trip to the Euro, but his results spoke for themselves. Now Bezus is in the line-up, but is unlikely to be the main one. Although entering the field for Euro, of course, is not excluded.
- Oleksandr Zubkov
Oleksandr has scored five goals in 25 games for Ferencváros this season. Scored in a recent international friendly against Northern Ireland. Has been in the national team for a long time.
In Euro, he can be considered as the main left-winger. Moreover, the competition on the left in the national team is really so-so.
- Roman Yaremchuk
The best scorer of “Ghent” (even despite the permanent conflicts that Roman had in the club), the main striker of the Ukrainian national team.
- Artem Besedin
Besedin missed a long period of time due to the "doping" scandal. He returned and in fact won a place at the base of “Dynamo.”
It is unlikely that he will play in the Euro at the start, but he should enter the field. And benefit too.
- Artem Dovbyk
Artem had an excellent season for Dnipro-1 in the Ukrainian league, attracting the attention of at least Ukrainian giants - Dynamo and Shakhtar.
The chances to appear on the field due to the similarity of the playing style of all three forwards are not enough.
