An epic victory for Shakhtar, a bitter defeat for Hoffenheim. And an amazing night on the pitch - this is what the football fans saw at Wirsol Rhein-Neckar-Arena on Tuesday night, when the Ukrainian and German team sorted it out in the UEFA Champions League fixture.
Shakhtar played the away game; it was crucial for the Mountaineers to win in this game, as any other outcome would result in the elimination from the tournament.
The first half appeared to be very lively, and Shakhtar managed to open the score and then doubled it immediately. The Germans got their act together and fought back, making it 2-2 by the halftime.
The struggler continued in the second half, with both teams having a number of opportunities - and bad luck with using them to their advantage. Hoffenheim had a player sent off, when Adam Szalai scored two yellow cards and, subsequently, the red one; both for fouling on two Shakhtar's players. But even despite that, the Germans had their chances and could score again. But, again, bad luck kept them from doing so.
Shakhtar, on the other hand, finally found a way in. Ismaily passed the ball to Taison, and the team captain turned around and, in cold blood, sent it into the net bypassing the goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Manchester City and Lyon played a 2-2 draw. The British already made it to the playoffs; as for Shakhtar and Lyin, they are to cross swords for the right to proceed to the next stage.
Shakhtar will host Lyon in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine on December 12.
