The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) banned Russia from taking part in the Olympic Games of 2020 and 2022. The decision was made after the doping scandal in the Russian team, the Court's press department reports.
The decision already took effect; it will be valid for two years, through December 16, 2022. The sanctions concern two Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020 (rescheduled for 2021) and Beijing 2022.
The Russian athletes who were not involved in the doping scandal (or concealed their doping test results) will be able to perform only under the neutral flag. They are forbidden to use their country's brand names, their national flag, and anthem.
In December 2017, the Russian team was banned from participating in the 2018 Olympics held in the Republic of Korea. Back then, some 300 Russian athletes were suspected of doping use.
In 2019, WADA (the World Anti-Doping Agency) opened almost a hundred cases against the suspected Russian athletes who performed during the 2014 Olympics in Sochi (Russia). Then, Russia was deprived of the right to perform in major international competitions within four years.
