On April 29, 1992 the Ukrainian national team played their first match while representing Ukraine as an independent country. During the friendly match our players lost to Hungary with a score of 1: 3. This loss had only pushed the Ukrainian team to work hard and reach its full potential.
In total the Ukrainian team had 227 matches, won 101, played a draw 65 times and lost 61.
Perhaps the most important achievement of the Ukrainian national football team was their participation in the 2006 World Cup. Under the guidance of the legendary former footballer Oleg Blokhin, our team won in the qualifying group with teams from Turkey, Denmark, Greece, Albania, Georgia and Kazakhstan. Later, in the finals, Ukrainians came out of the group H, which had included Spain, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. In the 1/8 finals of the football tournament Ukraine beat Switzerland, but ended up losing to Italy with a score of 0: 3. Italy ended up winning the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
In the finals of Euro 2012 in Group D, Ukraine met with teams from England, France and Sweden. Having won only a match against Zlatan Ibrahimovic team, Ukrainians completed their performance, but left only positive emotions after the game, because were able to withstand an equal footing against France and England. Also, during the European Championship in 2012 legendary Ukrainian forward Andriy Shevchenko completed his career as part of the national team.
Ukraine beats Sweden (Euro 2012)
In 2016, the Ukrainian team will perform at Euro 2016, which is also an achievement for us. We managed to get out of the qualifying group from the third place under the leadership of Mikhail Fomenko, and in the play-offs with Slovenian team we successfully pulled out a ticket to the tournament. In the Old World championship we will fight against the teams of Germany, Poland and Northern Ireland.
At least four times Ukraine was one step away from participation in Mundial, but lost in the play-offs. Such situation was in the selection for the World Championships of 1998, 2002, 2010 and 2014 year. In the critical confrontations Ukrainians lost firstly to Croatia, then to Germany, Greece and finally to France.
Speaking about the European Championships, only one time Ukraine was at a distance of "arm's length" from the tournament. It was in the selection for Euro 2000. In a group with France, Russia, Iceland, Andorra, Armenia we took second place. In the play-offs had to play with Slovenia, however, by the sum of two meetings, "yellow-blue" team was behind the tournament, losing with a score of 2: 3.
Selection for Euro-2000. Playoff, Ukraine-Slovenia
As we mentioned earlier, we got revenge on Slovenia in the selection for Euro 2016, so we hope no one remembers our failure in 2000. Now the team is gradually renewing - somebody leaves it, and someone makes his debut and remains at the basis. Now Ukrainian national team is preparing for the important tournament, but in which category we will include it – to "Achievements" or "Failures" – we will see later, from June 10 to July 10. During this period it will be decided the fate of the Euro 2016 winner.
