Ukraine’s Olympic team had great chances to win its first awards in this competition; pistol shooter, Olympic champion of Athens 2004 Olena Kostevych started performing in Rio with the 10 m individual event. Meanwhile, another Ukraine’s leader, Georgiy Zantaraya, performed in his judo event; however, both athletes weren’t even close to the triumph – this time. Kostevych finished 28th in the qualification round, and Zantaraya didn’t manage to make a single successful move in his duel.
Today in Rio, athletes will compete for 14 sets of medals. The U.S. team leads the way in teh team rankings with 12 awards, thanks in particular to the amazing performance of their swimmers. China and Australia come second and third, respectively. And Kosovo judoka Majlinda Kelmendi made history, winning the very first gold medal for her country at their first Olympics ever.
