Summer Paralympic Games officially started with a colorful opening ceremony on Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro
The organizers aimed at challenging stereotypes and reflecting the energy of Paralympic community.
During the ceremony, the President of Brazil Michel Temer announced Paralympic Games 2016 opened. At the same time, in the course of his speech he was repeatedly booed by the audience, which was a reflection of the political crisis in the country.
Paralympic Fire was lit by a six-time Paralympic champion in swimming Brazilian Clodoaldo Silva.
Sportsmen in 22 sports will compete for 528 sets of medals during 11 days of competitions. More than 4 thousand athletes from nearly 160 countries participated in the opening ceremony.
