Top Rank Promotions chairman Bob Arum announced that the boxing bout for the undisputed lightweight championship between Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko and American Teofimo Lopez will be postponed, the Athletic reports.
According to Arum, Madison Square Garden was interested in hosting this bout. “The Garden was going to make a major (financial) guarantee to get the fight,” he revealed.
A long-time promoter believes that there is no sense in holding this bout without spectators.
“If there is no spectators, that goes off the table, so what the f**k can you do except go to the fighters and explain the situation, that, ‘If you want to fight, you fight in a studio and your purse has got to be adjusted’," he added.
As we reported earlier, Vasyl Lomachenko is not willing to move up in weight in the future. According to the Ukrainian boxer, age appears to be the main factor.
“In the future, if my promoter can make a fight with a fighter from 59 kg (super featherweight division - 112 International.), I will go down there. In order to get a top opponent. I am not going to welterweight. I am not 20 years old, I am 31. The lightweight division is my natural limit,” Lomachenko said.
