Head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach said that the National Olympic Committee of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has been suspended until the end of 2022. This was reported by the IOC.
“The only National Olympic Committee that did not take part in the Tokyo Olympics was the NOC of the DPRK. This is a violation of the Olympic Charter. In view of this, the executive committee decided to remove the NOC of the DPRK by the end of 2022,” Bach said.
The head of the IOC added that the organization will stop funding the NOC of the DPRK and will not provide other sorts of support.
Athletes from the DPRK will be able to participate in the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, if they qualify. The IOC Executive Board will decide on the conditions for the participation of these athletes in a separate manner.
As it was reported earlier, North Korea continues developing its nuclear and ballistic missile programs during the first half of 2021 in violation of international sanctions and despite the country's worsening economic situation.
