Russia and its national Olympic team should be banned from participating in the two next Olympics – Pyeongchang 2018 and Tokyo 2020. Alfons Hörmann, the President of DOSB, the German Olympic Sports Union, said this in his interview with Welt am Sonntag, as quoted by DW.com.
The German official said that such ban would become a clear signal that the doping use among professional athletes is unacceptable. According to him, the doping scheme has been effective, with the use of state support; thus, the Russian National Olympic Committee definitely violated the Olympic Charter.
The topic of doping use by Russian athletes has been widely discussed in the light of trhe new documentary about banned substances in the Russian Olympic sport, aired at German TV channel ARD. In it, Russian runner Andrei Dmitriev was filmed with a hidden video camera, while covertly telling the reporter the names of several Russian athletes who obviously use performance-enhancing drugs – as well as coaches who silently support their actions.
In December 2016, the second part of the famous McLaren’s report was released; the document said that about a thousand Russian athletes performing in 30 kinds of sport were more or less involved in manipulations with positive doping probes.
In his New Year speech on December 30, 2016, President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach announced new sanctions against Russia.
