After beating Mongolia’s Tugstsogt Nyambayar in a mandatory title defense, which took place on February 8, American boxer stated that he wanted to unify titles or get the rematch with Vasyl Lomachenko who he to lost in 2014.
It was Lomachenko's third bout on the professional ring, while Russel Jr. was coming off a 24-fight winning streak. Ukrainian boxer outpointed his opponent and won vacant WBO featherweight title.
“I want a rematch with Vasyl Lomachenko. I do not want to do it for the fans. I do not want to do it for the media. I want to do it for myself. I have got too much integrity to let something like that go. I have to get that back,” Russell said.
Vasyl Lomachenko is now competing in the lightweight division (135 pounds), which is two categories above the limit of featherweight (126). It means that Gary Russell would have to go up in weight in order to secure the rematch with Ukrainian boxer.
As we reported earlier, according to Vasyl Lomachenko's promoter, Bob Arum, the choice of the venue for the upcoming fight against Teofimo Lopez depends on Saul Alvarez.
“There is no specific venue yet. It could be Madison Square Garden, New York, but people from Las Vegas are also interested in this bout. It all depends on Saul Alvarez. Is he going to fight on Cinco de Mayo (May 2) in Las Vegas or is he willing to fight Ryoto Murata in Tokyo? We will see,” he added.
