As of now, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) observes the deplorable state of natural resources and the environment in Ukraine while no research on the possible extinction of some species of animals and plants is being conducted. It was reported by UNIAN with reference to the organization's Ukrainian office (WWF-Ukraine).

Its experts state that there is an uncontrolled shooting of animals by poachers (in particular, lynx, brown bear, elk) in our country. Data on lynx and bear populations over the last ten years show that their numbers have not increased, despite their long-term conservation status (bears have been listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine since 2003, and lynxes - since 1994).

Populations of fish species are also declining.

"We observe a sharp decrease in the number of aquatic inhabitants. This is due to the transformation of rivers - straightening of channels, creating artificial barriers, destruction of natural complexes in floodplains, in particular for agriculture, sand and gravel extraction, and continuous deforestation. However, monitoring of freshwater biological resources has not been systematically introduced in Ukraine, and there is no action plan on how to restore the populations," the statement said.

As we reported earlier, on June 25, Ukraine officially joined the European air quality database.
