The World Health Organization (WHO) will begin negotiations on an agreement to tackle the pandemic as Reuters reported.

“The World Health Organization (WHO) agreed on Wednesday to launch negotiations on an international pact to prevent and control future pandemics at a time,” the message says.

It is noted that an agreement to strengthen measures to prevent and combat pandemics will be ready in May 2024, and will cover issues from data exchange and genome sequencing of new viruses to potential vaccines and drugs obtained from research.

The decision was taken today by consensus at a special ministerial assembly of 194 countries that are members of the UN health authority.

"This momentous step represents our collective responsibility to work together to advance health security and to make the global health system stronger and more responsive,” the message says.

The EU has pushed for an international legally binding agreement with some 70 countries, diplomats say, but Brazil, India and the United States were among those unwilling to conclude such a pact.

Currently, there are more than 262.22 million people worldwide infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, and 5.46 million have died since its introduction in China in December 2019.

Earlier, the World Health Organization Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) has named the coronavirus strain B.1.1.529 Omicron with 32 mutations in the spike protein. The virus uses this part to enter the cell of the body with its subsequent infection. The characteristics of the B.1.1.529 virus could give rise to serious concern among scientists about the hazard of this strain. In particular, Omicron was recorded in the Republic of South Africa, Belgium, Israel, Germany, Italy, Austria, Great Britain.
