Since the US withdraws from WHO, Germany, France, and Chile are signaling that they agree with many of the changes the US is seeking from WHO. The journalists found that four countries agree on several points:
- WHO must have access to areas where the outbreak occurred at an early stage;
- WHO should have a more detailed system for identifying health emergencies than the current one;
- WHO needs to be able to assess whether countries are in compliance with international regulations for health emergencies and are prepared to respond to them.
- WHO's lack of access to China in the early stages of the coronavirus outbreak, as well as its inability to hold China and other countries accountable for not reporting emergencies quickly, has been an incentive to advocate for such organizational changes.
“There is important common ground on how to address these issues and reform the organization so that we can avoid a repeat of the Covid-19 catastrophe in the future,” a spokesman for the US Department of Health and Human Services said.
Everyone agrees that there will be more pandemics in the future. A well-known Belgian virologist even said that humanity may be entering an era of pandemics.
