The World Health Organization considers dexamethasone to be the only effective drug in Covid-19 treatment. This was stated by WHO Director - General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a briefing, the press service of the organization informs.
"For the moment, the corticosteroid dexamethasone is still the only therapeutic shown to be effective against Covid-19, for patients with severe disease,” Ghebreyesus declared.
Six months ago, WHO launched the Solidarity Trial to evaluate the effectiveness of four drugs for the treatment of Covid-19.
The Solidarity Trial is the world’s largest randomized controlled trial of Covid-19 therapeutics, involving almost 13,000 patients in 500 hospitals in 30 countries.
Interim results from the trial now show that remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir and interferon have little or no effect in preventing death from Covid-19 or reducing time in hospital.
