"The Director-General of WHO has called for a moratorium on booster vaccination for healthy adults until the end of 2021 to counter the persisting and profound inequity in global vaccine access," the press service of WHO reports.

The purpose of restrictions on booster or supplementary adult vaccinations is to combat the long-standing and profound injustice of access to vaccines around the world.

According to Ghebreyesus, many countries are far from reaching the target of the immunization program coverage of 40% of the population by the end of 2021. However, other countries have vaccinated citizens well above this threshold, started vaccinating children and implemented expanded revaccination programs. Currently, worldwide, about 20% of the doses of Covid-19 vaccine are used for booster vaccination or vaccination with an additional dose.

"Vaccine booster dose policy decisions should be based on evidence of individual and public health benefit and obligations to secure global equity in vaccine access as a means to minimize health impacts and transmission, and thereby reduce the risk of variants and prolongation of the pandemic," WHO head stresses.

As it was reported, recently Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson said that a booster dose could protect against a new coronavirus version Omicron.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has given recommendations for a booster dose of vaccination against Covid.
