US military base in Syria

Drones fired missiles at a US military base in the border town of At-Tanf, Syria on October 20, CNN TV channel informed citing a source in the Pentagon.

"We maintain the inherent right of self-defense and will respond at a time and place of our choosing," Spokesman for the Central Command Captain Bill Urban reacted.

The targets were barracks and outbuildings. Fires broke out in a number of places, Al Mayadeen reportes.

According to preliminary data, there are no casualties among the US military. The amount of material damage is being determined. No terrorist group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident.

The base is located in a 20-square-mile conflict zone near the Syrian border with Jordan, which was set up by Russia and a US-led coalition to prevent accidental contact between the two sides. In recent years, fierce fighting has taken place in the area between US forces and ISIS, which has become entrenched in the area.

As it was reported earlier, the Pentagon conducted targeted airstrikes against “facilities used by Iran-backed militia groups” on the Iraq-Syria border in late June. Specifically, the US strikes targeted operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and one location in Iraq, both of which lie close to the border between those countries.
