The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is concerned about the possibility of the emergence of a ‘lost generation’ of children due to the long-term influence of the pandemic on their education, nutrition, and general welfare, as the UNICEF reported.

“While children can get sick and can spread the disease, this is just the tip of the pandemic iceberg. Disruptions to key services and soaring poverty rates pose the biggest threat to children. The longer the crisis persists, the deeper its impact on children’s education, health, nutrition, and well-being. The future of an entire generation is at risk,” UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore stated.

The UNICEF report notes that despite the fact that the symptoms of the infected children remain mild, the number of infection cases increases, and the long-term influence on education, nutrition, and general welfare of the whole generation of children and young people might change their life. The experts of the organization assure that the closing of schools in some way influenced 572 million students (33%) in 30 countries of the world.

Besides, the report states that due to the consequences of the pandemic until the end of 2020, about seven million children under five years of age will be diagnosed with the signs of wasting or acute malnutrition (14% growth). It might lead to extra 10,000 cases of child death per month, mostly in the countries of Africa and South Asia.
