The UN urged the Ukrainian government authorities to investigate the activity of Myrotvorets website where the private information of the journalists and public figures was published. It stated at the report of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the observance of human rights in Ukraine.

The report claims that the Ukrainian journalists and public figures who criticized the authorities suffer from the pressure from the Ukrainian armed forces and law enforcement. The OHCHR stated the increase of the number of the violent incidents towards the journalists and public figures.

The National Police opened the criminal proceeding against the website Myrotvorets on July 7.  It published the private information of thousands of people in August 2017, including the media experts and activists of the nongovernmental organizations calling them the supporters of the armed groups and terrorism.

The OHCHR welcomes this step and insistently urges the government authorities, particularly the National Police to instantly and effectively investigate supposed violations connected with the website Myrotvorets and assume measures to remove the private information from it.

Myrotvorets published the lists of the journalists who got the accreditation in the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic in 2016. A few thousands of Ukrainian and worldwide workers of the mass media were put in these lists (AFP, Al Jazeera, BBC, Reuters, France 24, Sky news, CNN, Xinhua, Associated Press, The Guardian and others). Totally there are more than 4 000 of the journalists, published telephone numbers, emails and period of time spent in the occupied territories.

The Prosecutor’s Office opened the criminal investigation under part 1, article 171 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Interfere in the legal professional activity of the journalists).
