Member of the Ukrainian polar expedition, cook Vasyl Omelyanovych deceased at the Antarctic station ‘Academician Vernadsky’. The National Antarctic Science Center reported that.

"On May 8, 2020, cook of the 25th Ukrainian Antarctic expedition Vasily Omelyanovich died at the Academician Vernadsky station. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the National Antarctic Scientific Center sincerely sympathize with Vasyl’s parents, brother, friends and relatives," the statement said.

“We all knew Vasily as a very calm, balanced and kind person, a true professional. This was his fifth expedition to the Academician Vernadsky station. Now we are figuring out all the circumstances of death, it is known beforehand that he committed suicide because of personal problems. Unfortunately, we are all living people, and no one knows in advance what will become the last straw. The issue of delivering the body to Ukraine is being solved. The duties of the cook at the station will be performed by all other participants and expeditions," said Yevhen Dykyi, the head of the National Antarctic Research Center.

Vasyl Omelyanovych was born in 1985. He lived in the city of Malyn, Zhytomyr region.
