Ukrainian scientists have passed the initial stages in the development of a vaccine against coronavirus. It is planned to develop the drug by the end of 2021. The director of the Institute of Cell Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician Andriy Sibirny, announced this as the press service of the department reports.
According to him, Ukrainian scientists from Lviv are working to create a protein Covid vaccine, yeast is used to create it.
"Such vaccines, from Novavax, it is also a protein vaccine. It is also a protein of coronavirus, but it is synthesized not in yeast, but insect cells. Lviv scientists decided to work with yeast because they already have a positive experience with it. They make vitamins and antibiotics on yeast," said Sibirny.
He also noted that scientists have passed the initial stages in the development of a vaccine against coronavirus. The Covid-19 vaccine is planned to be developed by the end of this year, but the drug will still need to be tested.
"Viral proteins should be tested on laboratory animals - transgenic mice, which will be infected with the virus and given with a vaccine. It is unknown whether such research will be possible in Ukraine," he added.
At the same time, Sibirny stressed that the last stage of work will have to be done with the help of scientists in Poland.
In addition, according to Sibirny, during the development of this vaccine, Lviv scientists decided to create another drug for coronavirus in pill form.
It is noted that Lviv scientists received around $360,000 for the development of the Covid-19 vaccine.
As it was reported earlier, Ukrainian scientists have developed three prototypes of coronavirus vaccines.
Besides, the Minister of Health of Ukraine Maksym Stepanov said that there are two developments in the country that could become a vaccine in the future.
The drugs have already reached the stabilization of the dosage form, that is, they go through all preclinical phases in order to move to the clinical phase.
