Ukrainian sailor dies in fire at vessel in Indian Ocean

A 20-year-old Ukrainian sailor died at MSC Messina vessel that made the passage from Sri Lanka to Singapore as Hromadske reported citing Spokesperson of Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Oleh Nikolenko.

Totally, 28 members of the crew were on the board, including 26 Ukrainians. Other sailors did not suffer as a result of the fire.

On June 25, in the distance of about 790 km from Port Blair on the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean, the fire occurred at the machinery department of MSC Messina. A citizen of Ukraine of 2001year of birth died.

The fire was extinguished by the crew and a few vessels that were not far from the incident side. Currently, the MSC Messina is being tugged to Singapore. Approximately, it should arrive on July 4.

The body of the deceased Ukrainian was already transferred to Singapore. It is being prepared for transfer to Ukraine.  

In April 2021, the Ukrainian citizen was captured due to the attack of pirates on the Tommi Ritscher ship. The raid took place off the coast of Benin, in Africa. In May 2021, a Ukrainian citizen was released from pirates' captivity; he was taken hostage on a vessel off the coast of Benin last month.
