The Venice Commission states that the Ukrainian government should strive for a balance in language policy so that the language problem does not become a source of interethnic tension in Ukraine.  The Council of Europe press service said, Interfax reports.

At the same time, the Commission emphasizes that this has not yet been done, including in the recent law on the state language.  This is the main conclusion of the new opinion adopted today by the Venice Commission.

The head of the PACE monitoring committee, British conservative Roger Gale, on May 22, requested the opinion of the Venice Commission regarding the law of Ukraine "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language", which the ex-president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed on May 15.

As we reported earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has appointed Tetiana Monakhova a State Language Commissioner.
