The total box office of Ukrainian production films, which were released in 2018 amounted to 7 105 000 USD (UAH 198 936 000), which is the record for the Ukrainian cinema. The Head of State Cinema company Pylyp Ilyenko posted that on Facebook.
On January 25, the official reported on the recent activity results of his department and published a presentation with the main figures. According to the slides, 35 films of Ukrainian production were released in 2018, 22 of which were funded with the support of State Cinema. This is the highest figure in the last five years.
The number of viewers who chose to watch Ukrainian films on the wide screen has also grown significantly. So, 8.63% of the total number of cinema visitors preferred Ukrainian films, thus collecting 8.15% of the total box office over the past year.
The most popular ones were the comedy "Crazy Wedding" (1 960 000 USD, 54.9 million UAH), the cartoon "The Stolen Princess" (1 300 000 USD, 36.4 million UAH) and "Me, You, He, She" (596,5 thousand USD, 16.7 million UAH).
Nevertheless, Ukrainian cinema does not bring profit yet. In total for 2018 State Cinema invested UAH 505.5 million in the production of domestic films. At the same time, the special fund of the department received 8.6 million UAH. However, the state planned to earn only 2.5 million UAH on the Ukrainian films. So the department called this figure successful.
State Cinema also boasted about festival successes. Seven class "A" festivals showed our films in the framework of contests and special programs. Including Cannes, Berlin and Venice Film Festivals. At the same time, the film "Donbas" by Serhiy Loznytsia took the Cannes palm branch for best direction.
