Ukrainian lawmakers in Brazil

Ukrainian has become the official language of Prudentopolis municipality in Brazil. Press office of the Ukrainian World Congress reported that on October 7.

All lawmakers supported the respective draft law on the session on October 5.

"The municipality of Prudentopolis already established friendly relations with Ternopil region, where most of the Ukrainian immigrants came from to Brazil. The new law will create new opportunities for exchanging specialists, educating the youth on the university level in Ukraine or via digital devices, remotely", reads the message.

Prudentopolis is the municipality and its administrative centre in Parana, southern Brazil. The population here amounts to 52,000 people. 75 percent of these people are of Ukrainian origin, which de facto makes Prudentopolis the capital of Ukrainian community in Brazil.

The first wave of immigrants from Ukraine came here in 1885, when 1500 Ukrainian families from the western part of the country settled in Prudentopolis. One of the districts of Prudentopolis is called Nova Galicia, referring to Halychyna, where these Ukrainians originally came from.
