Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine registered a bill "On the official language"

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has registered a bill "On Language" on January 19. The authors offer to extend the scope of use of the Ukrainian language - in public and social life, as well as in the media.

Profile parliamentary committee started to consider the bill on January 20. 33 People’s Deputies from different parties became the initiators of the bill.

Ukrainian is offered to be made mandatory in pre-school, school, after-school and higher education. The schools and kindergartens will be allowed to use minority languages; universities will not be able to do that. Education in universities should be conducted only in Ukrainian, the presentation is allowed on one or more objects in one of the EU official languages.

All cultural events also will have to be conducted exclusively in the state language. Theatrical performances in other languages must be accompanied by subtitles in the Ukrainian language.

Ukrainian movies can also be filmed in Ukrainian only. Several replicas can be added in other languages if there is a subtitle.

Media will also be obliged to use only the Ukrainian language. The broadcasts in other languages must be duplicated in the Ukrainian language. TV and Radio Company will be obliged to provide simultaneous translation into the Ukrainian language, if one of the participants of the program speaks a different language.

Electronic media will need a page on the Ukrainian language, which should be loaded by default to the user.

Ukrainian language is also positioned as the main language of printing and publishing. Circulations in other languages cannot exceed the circulation in the Ukrainian language.

The stores, restaurants and other will also have to use only the Ukrainian language.

Those who violate the law will receive fines. The attemps to “introduce the official multilingualism in Ukraine" will face criminal liability because they will be regarded as the attempt to overthrow the political system (art. 109 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Public contempt of language will be equated to the abuse of the state symbols of Ukraine (Art. 338 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Special language inspectors will ensure the enforcement of the law.
