Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council reports the risk of water shortage

Ukraine could face the lack of drinking water before 2050; the reason is that the rivers in this country are overloaded with garbage and toxic substances. Press office of the State Inspection for Environmental Policy of Ukraine reported that on March 22. 

"According to the estimates of Hydrometeorological Service, the share of toxic substance in Ukrainian rivers exceeds the maxumum norms by 30-40 times. Due to that, according to forecasts of the Institute of Water Problems and Soil Improvement, Ukraine will have to import drinking water by 2050", said Andriy Malyovany, the Head of the State Inspection for Environmental Policy.

The official added that water is considered a renewable source, but its resources on Earth have been running out dramatically.

"Protection of water bodies of Ukraine must be a priority taks because it's about lives of millions of people. So, the Inspection constantly wortks to boost control in this area. Last year, we signed a cooperation memorandum with the State Water Agency, and we work together to create the system of operative surveillance on the status of water bodies", Malyoavany said.
