Ukraine has launched a joint special operation Polissia on the border with Belarus. It involves forces of the National Guard, National Police, Armed Forces and border guards, the press service of the State Border Guard Service Of Ukraine reports.
"These are further measures to increase the protection and defense of the Ukrainian border in order to prevent a migration crisis and combat illegal activities," the statement reads.
According to Deputy Head of the State Border Guard Service Volodymyr Nikiforenko, there is a threat of a migration crisis on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border and the possibility of redirecting migrant flows to Ukraine, so law enforcement agencies are working together to increase the border protection system in this area.
"In order to further respond to the possible complication of the situation, a joint special border operation has been agreed with joint interactive state structures and a corresponding plan has been worked out. And last night, it officially started," he said.
Nikiforenko also noted that the main task of the special operation is to prevent illegal migrants from crossing the state border and entering Ukraine.
The control of the state border regime will be carried out by increased border patrols with simultaneous increase of forces and means in possible directions of attempts to break through groups of illegal migrants.
The aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles and technical means of surveillance will be actively used in border protection for patrolling and monitoring.
In addition, a significant strengthening of the border regime along the Ukrainian-Belarusian section of the state border is envisaged. Within the controlled border areas, checkpoints will be set up on highways and patrol the main roads leading to the state border, bus and railway stations will be inspected, and preventive measures will be taken in border settlements.
As it was reported earlier, Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Denys Monastyrsky stated that Ukraine must be ready to impose a state of emergency in the border areas due to the inflow of migrants from Belarus.
He also noted that Ukraine will use echelon cover tactics to protect border guards and will allow to open fire.
