On January 16, Ukraine paid tribute to the ‘cyborgs’, the warriors who tragically perished during the battle of Donetsk airport. The heroic defense of the airport lasted for 242 days.

Marking the anniversary of the final days of the airport’s defense, General Staff of the Ukrainian Army released the video, devoting it to the deceased fighters.  

The fights for Donetsk airport, the strategically important infrastructure object were running from May 2014 through January 2015. Ukrainian government forces opposed the armed gangs of Russian militants; the Ukrainian troops included fighters from various units – both regular army units and volunteer armed formations of the Interior Ministry.

During the final attack on the airport in January 2015, the enemy blew up the ceiling of the ground floor, which killed almost 60 Ukrainian fighters. The HQ ordered the remaining Ukrainian forces to retreat and take positions not far from the airport.

According to the official data, at least 200 Ukrainian troops deceased in the battle.
