Ukraine has to strengthen its defensive potential because the INF Treaty is suspended. The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko stated this during the session of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, broadcasted by 112 Ukraine.
“Ukraine understands the decision of our partners, the United States of America, on exit from the Treaty on the Elimination of Their Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles. The gradual collapse of Russia's disarmament control system including within the framework of the treaty on common armed forces in Europe and the treaties on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles encourage us and our partners to take measures in order to maintain security”, - Poroshenko said.
According to the President, this decision will influence Ukraine as well.
“It relieves Ukraine from some restrictions and commitments, by which we have been abiding. Under such conditions we have to think very carefully about the additional fortification of the defensive potential of our country”, - the Head of State added.
As we reported earlier, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin signed the order on exit from Treaty on the Elimination of Their Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty).
According to the document, the reason for signing the order is the violations by the USA of their duties. Putin ordered to cease the INF Treaty implementation “till the US eliminate their violations or till the treaty comes out of force”.
Earlier, the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated that on February 2, the country would suspend participation in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia.
