“Ukrainians lodged the most applications since March 2017,” the message says.
It is noted that during the last month of winter, the number of applications has significantly increased in comparison with January. Totally, 38,000 applications for asylum were filed in February, 971 of them were from Ukraine. It is by 70% more than during the previous months and it is the largest number of applications since March 2017.
Thus, for the first time since 2017 Ukraine entered the TOP 10 countries, which citizens request asylum in the EU.
According to the EASO, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Nigeria remain to be the leaders. A quarter of all applications was received from Syrians.
Meanwhile, the overall number of applications remains lower than before the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2019, Ukrainians received third place among refugees in the United States, after the citizens of Congo and Myanmar. The number of refugees from Ukraine to the United States from October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2019 (the fiscal year in the United States, - Ed.) amounted to 4451, i.e. 15% of the total number of asylum seekers. In 2016, Ukrainians accounted for 3% of all refugees.
