On January 20, Ukrainians pay tribute to the "cyborgs", the collective name of Ukrainian soldiers who defended Donetsk airport in the battle that took place in 2014-2015.
The military orchestra performed in the hall of Boryspil international airport.
Ukraine's Defense Ministry reported that solemn events took place there, featuring families of the "cyborgs" and President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting took place next to the Ministry's building.
Ukraine's warriors held their positions in Donetsk airport for 242 consecutive days in 2014 and 2015, outgunned and outnumbered. The enemy landed strikes from multiple missile launchers, tanks and mortars. heavy sniper fire was observed, too. Stunned by their fortitude, the hostile fighters called them "the cyborgs".
About 200 Ukrainian soldiers deceased in that battle; some 500 more were wounded in action. On January 21, 2015, a decision was made to withdraw Ukrainian servicemen from the new terminal of the airport, since this facility was completely destroyed and was not suitable for defense.
