Two bombs through minutes apart blew near the Roman Catholic cathedral on a southern Philippine island, where Muslim militants act, Associated Press reports.

The first bomb exploded inside the Jolo cathedral or near it during a Sunday mass, after that a second blast happened near the building, when the governmental forces were reacting on the attack, according to witnesses.

The police reported that at least 27 people died and 77 were wounded. In particular, 20 common habitants and 7 servicemen died. 14 servicemen, 2 policemen and 61 civilians were wounded.

The troops blocked the main road, which leads to the cathedral, with armored personnel carriers in order to transport the deceased and wounded people to the local hospital.

Some victims were evacuated by air to near-by town.  

The press also reports that the militants of Abu Sayyaf, who are blacklisted by the United States and the Philippines as a terrorist organization due to bombing, kidnapping and murdering people. However, no one has taken the responsibility for the attack yet.

In addition, the incident occurred after southern inhabitants of the Philippines, where the Muslims settled down, voted for creating a new autonomous region, which includes five provinces and three cities.  The government hopes that it will bring peace to this part of the country and will solve the problems, because of which the locals become members of the Islamic State.
