All-Ukrainian commercial TV channels got the right to require cable network operators to be paid for broadcasting their content since today, January 1. The respective law specifying the terms of broadcast distribution in frames of the general program service comes into its force on the first day of 2017.

The law interprets the notion of the general program service in a new way, specifically as a “list of TV programs which are obligatory to be obtained by all the subscribers of the provider of the general program service”.

According to the new law, the provider is now obliged to provide all its subscribers with the opportunity to get the service. At that there is no need to conclude any agreements with the TV companies.

Thus all-national commercial TV channels are excluded from the service and shall switch to contract relations, which enables them to require the broadcast fee from the cable networks. In its term, this may lead to rising costs for pay-per-view TV for the subscribers.
