Ukrainian space engineering experts successfully modernized the Antares rocket. It is the expendable launch system developed by Orbital Sciences Corporation (now Orbital ATK) to launch the Cygnus spacecraft to the International Space Station as part of NASA's COTS and CRS programs.
Olexandr Turchynov, the Secretary of National Security and Defense Council, congratulated everyone involved in this project, as Ukrainian experts made the rocket compatible with the new engine. He posted this at Facebook on Tuesday.
‘Over the last 1.5 years, Ukrainian specialists have worked to modernize the first degree of Antares rocket, making it compatible with the new engine. The decision to replace the previous, Russia-made engine was made in 2014, when the rocket blew up at the start due to the malfunction of the engine. The Ukrainian experts had a unique task – to make the entirely new engine compatible with the rocket as soon as possible. And they made it! Now, the changes in the rocket’s construction made it possible to increase its power capabilities and efficiency. I congratulate everyone who joined this great project. Ukraine has something to be proud of!,’ Turchynov wrote.
